Why night time matters.
For many families living with eczema, the most difficult hours are not during the day, they are after dark.
For my daughter, nighttime was when everything intensified. What appeared manageable in daylight became overwhelming once the house grew quiet. Within an hour of falling asleep, the itching would begin. Restless movements. Scratching. Sheets kicked away. Broken sleep for her and for us.
It was in those long nights that I realised something important: nighttime is when sensitive skin is at its most vulnerable.
As children settle into sleep, their core body temperature naturally fluctuates. Even small increases in warmth can trigger itch responses in eczema-prone skin. Heat dilates blood vessels and can amplify inflammation, making already reactive skin feel even more irritated. When sleepwear traps warmth or holds onto moisture, it creates an environment where itching can intensify rather than settle.
There is also a hormonal shift that occurs in the evening. Cortisol the body’s natural anti-inflammatory hormone decreases at night. During the day, it helps keep inflammation somewhat regulated. As levels drop in the evening, the skin may feel more inflamed and itching can become more pronounced, particularly in the stillness of bedtime.
Fabric plays a quiet but powerful role in this cycle.
Synthetic materials often trap heat and limit airflow. Many bamboo fabrics are heavily processed or blended, reducing their natural breathability. Even traditional cotton, while natural, can retain moisture and create friction once damp which may aggravate delicate skin instead of supporting it.
And yet, nighttime is also when the skin works hardest to repair.
During sleep, the body shifts into restoration mode. Skin cell turnover increases. The barrier begins rebuilding. Hydration levels rebalance. It is a critical window for healing but only if the environment supports that process.
The right sleepwear can help regulate temperature, reduce friction and draw moisture away from the skin. A breathable, exceptionally smooth fabric creates a calm surface for sensitive skin to rest without disruption.
Star of Raya was born from those nights — from the desire to create an environment where skin could feel supported, not stimulated. Because when nighttime is thoughtfully designed, it becomes more than just sleep.
It becomes an opportunity for restoration.
